While walking to work yesterday I ran across a blind man walking towards me.
first off, he was walking down the center of the sidewalk. if you stay to one side of the sidewalk you allow for traffic to go both ways, but when you walk down the center you slow down people behind you and make people in front of you have to move. under normal circumstances one would see you and move out of the way, but he was clearly blind, swinging his cane back and forth, taking up the whole sidewalk and showing no sign of moving.
Everyone knows that when you lose one sense the others become stronger to compensate. usually when i see a blind person walking towards me i don't mind, they have never ceased to hear my footsteps and avoid running into anyone. but this time was different. that jackass was on a cell phone. i kept my eye on him, hoping that he would hear my footsteps anyways, hoping that he knew what he was doing, but in the end i had to step off the sidewalk to avoid him.
I'm not promoting discrimination against the blind, but i do believe they should be held to the same standards of courtesy as anyone else. they shouldn't get special jackass privileges because they're blind, they should accept the reality that they're blind and not talk on a cell phone while they're walking down the street if they can't see. |
